Hi all, I've been mulling over an idea recently which you may or may not be interested in.
Since our earthquake way back in February there have been 1,227 buildings marked for demolition and that number still seems to be growing (there were 65 added last week). Most are in the CBD but many are also in the outer suburbs. About a quarter of them are listed heritage buildings. Among the others are several large (by our standards) hotel and office towers including some very modern buildings. AFAIK our Town Hall is still in doubt and I'm not sure about the fate of both the Anglican and Catholic cathedrals. As you might understand, many people are quite upset about the loss of history and the way the landscape in our central city is changing. Because of this I'm wondering if we could each go out and photograph our favourite building, or at least dig a nice pic out of the archives. The rules I've thought of so far are as follows: 1. It must currently be standing (unoccupied is ok, as is derelict) 2. It must be in your current town or city of residence. I could be flexible and allow your home town as well. 3. You'd have to write a short passage to explain why you like it and/or why it's important to you. 4. You must own the copyright or have permission from the copyright holder (I would prefer if you took the photo but if your spouse or a close relative did, that's fine by me). I'll accept any reason for rule #3, it doesn't have to be a work of architectural beauty. I'm more interested in why it's significant to YOU. Would anyone be interested? It's only an idea at this stage. I was thinking about starting a whole website for it but that may be a bit over the top. However it may be feasible for a local audience so I'm sitting tight on that one. - Weird, we had a good size shake just now. Biggest for a couple of months. I grabbed a screen shot of the Geonet real-time intensity image. It's quite cool to see these things light up. http://www.multi.net.nz/shake-screenshot/ I had that within about a minute, but I grabbed another one as they hadn't quite received the signals from more distant sensors. More details to come once they've analysed it, but it appears to have originated close to here. My uneducated guess would be Richter 5.2, probably about 10km from my house, but we'll wait and see. I'm usually a bit out and looking at the seismograph I may even have underestimated.
