I did about three dozen Google Image Searches, with various combinations of keywords I gleaned from the image and initial description, but couldn't find anything even remotely like the thing in the picture. It is one weird little critter!

I asked a friend of mine who is rather knowledgeable about insects, arthropods and plants, and he didn't know either. These were some of his thoughts:

1. Is it even an animal? It could be a strange furry fungus, but the symmetry suggests that might not be the case.

2. It could be only a piece of an animal, and I can't recognize it without the rest of it.

3. It could be a strange disguise/camouflage of something more mundane. It's vaguely spider-like, but I can easily say that it's also trilobite-like. It doesn't seem to resemble any of the major animal groups that I know.
- unquote-

If it is an animal, I'm betting it's some sort of arthropod. That's the best I can do, unfortunately.
