Tonight it was neither cloudy, nor had the moon risen, so on my way
home from aikido I pulled off into a moderately dark parking lot to
try out my astrotracer.

Each was shot at a different combination of ISO, shutter speed and
aperture, varying from ISO 1600 to ISO 100.
Excellent first attempts. This was the K-5, right? What lens? Any
post processing?
Coincidentally, I was out a couple of nights ago in my field trying
to do the same thing with my old *ist D and a Tamron 17mm f3.5
adaptall lens. I took a series of 30 second exposures at ISO 800 with
both noise reduction on and then off. I was racing an incoming cloud
bank so I knew they weren't going to be that good, and a quick glance
at them later in Aperture confirms that.
Interesting, though: in each frame I took with the noise reduction
off, there is a bright glow in the upper left corner. I assume that
is heat from the camera's power supply.
One thing that I learned is that I'm going to need to go out during
the day, focus my lenses on infinity and mark exactly where that is.
I will also, definitely need to practice with stacking software.
I downloaded Keith's Image Stacker (Mac) but there are no
instructions with it and I haven't figured out how to get it to
work...
