Earlier this week I ordered a cheap 160-LED shoe-mount "video light"
to get my feet wet. Received it yesterday and it has already proven to
be a very useful tool.

I stuck it on a micro-tripod this morning and illuminated subjects
that were only lit on the opposite side by a distant north-facing
window. Even after 30 minutes of playing around with the light, the
batteries were still showing 3 bars (out of 4). For about $80 (Can) I
can see I'm going to get a lot of use out of it. It's great having
constant light so you can see the effects of moving it around. Turned
up it's blindingly bright to look straight at and it can very brightly
light a large portion of a wall. I must try it in a reflective
umbrella.
