I imagine that two shots at different exposures could solve some of
that problem.
I don't think that a tripod is necessary,
although combining the two might be a little tricky.

You can import the individual images into Photoshop as layers & use "align layers".

Alas I was not able to get the needed dynamic range out of the K-5
sensor. Didn't have a tripod at hand, so the HDR function was not an
option. Didn't think about the Highlight and Shadows Corection
features. (The fact is that I've never really tested them).

So the exposure is an old scool compromise
