My favorite is still the action shot from the dojo, 20111116-LRC21577.jpg

Fine composition and really great timing (that decisive moment thing).

Thank you. I try to remember to mix things up when I'm photographing tests, change shutter speeds, focal lengths and when I can angles. I don't need every shot to turn out perfectly, and by taking risks, I don't get the same shot over and over.

The photo in the upper right is O Sensei, the founder of the art. The scroll was actually written by O Sensei and says "True Victory is Self Victory", (Victory over oneself). One of those subtle details that I amuse myself with is adjusting the cropping of photos so that the characters for "victory" or "self victory" are visible. I realize that very few people looking at my photos will know what they say (though the members of our dojo should) and even fewer will think of them as a caption. But, it amuses me.

In a similar vein, I had fun with the composition of this one:

It is often challenging to position myself so that there aren't reflections in those, and someone's head isn't in the way. It seems that inevitably someone very tall will be sitting right in front of the places I can get clear shots of the photo or the scroll.

I've been so busy working on this contract that I guess I did almost no
photography "for myself", mostly just photographing exams at the dojo.
This month's best of set is rather sparse:
