I've sold to KEH in person and their offering prices for several Pentax film slrs were almost an insult. All cameras were in good to excellent condition with some add ons included - gridded screen, optional data backs where available - etc. I still sold the bodies to them, just to get them out of the house.

On the other hand, I've bought several Pentaxc lenses from them an have always gotten better condition lenses than they were listed as.

Subject: OT: The myth of KEH "bargain" lenses

The background:
Wife and I were at my photographer son-in-law (and No. 1 daughter's)
place earlier this week for the evening. He's the one who bought my
(after falling in love with it) Pentax 6x7 kit. It included a 105mm
f2.4 and a 55mm f3.5. For whatever reason, he chose to pass on the
135mm Macro (which I still have). He mentioned that he was considering
getting a longer telephoto for it and I told him that KEH had a couple
of crazy cheap 200mm f4s that he might take a chance on. (I had been
looking at their selection just the day before).

In particular, they had a BGN rated S-M-C 200mm f4 for $45. We
discussed how people seemed to be pleasantly surprised at their BGN
rated purchases from KEH and he decided to take a chance on it and
ordered it on the spot (Tues. evening). I got an email from him just a
bit ago which consisted of the following message:

"Myth: KEH "bargain" lenses are are an incredible bargain. Myth confirmed!"

The flip side of this is that if they were selling it for $45, some
poor fellow probably got very little for it on the selling end. The
other lesson may be that if you are selling something to KEH and you
put in a particular grade (according to their descriptions) using
their online quote form, you will probably find that they downgrade it
(not upgrade it) once they actually see it/list it. Final thought, it
is pretty sad how low the demand must be for Pentax 6x7 stuff, to see
the prices that people are gettting/not getting for this stuff. I'm
(again) tempted to get one for myself, as I may never be able to pry
my former one out of my son-in-law's hands again!
