        try this first ...

        Take the rewind crank and turn it counterclockwise until it
        comes off. Use a blade in the slot of the part that grabs the
        film canister to stabilize things. From memory, there's a screw
        under it that connects is to the shaft. Remove this (or whatever
        separates the two) and thoroughly clean the shaft & its passage
        w/ some sort of non-residual solvent. Reassemble and all should
        be well again.

        A very fine film of grunge can build up in there and mess up
        the smooth turning of the shaft, causing symptoms you describe.

        I got this tip from a fellow PDML'er years ago and it solved
        my same dilemma.
