Thanks Bob. The shots are taken 1 after the other (using my timer cable release). The shots are then layered in a program called Starstax (free to download & available for PC, Mac & Linux) which combined the multiple 1 minute startrails into 1 long one.
This is a handy technique for cameras that get noisy at long exposures, or cameras that have no bulb mode (P&S for example).
