I read that in Wikipedia too.

I've been in DC several times in the last 5 years. A couple of times I've seen the helicopters land at the White House & learned later that they were indeed there to pick up or deliver the President. In both cases I saw only one helicopter being used.

On another occasion I saw two of them flying in formation. I was too far away to see if they had just come from the White House, but you wouldn't be able to know from the ground which one the President was in if he was.

Yesterday, I was on an errand and noticed a CH-43 helicopter flying south near my house. CH-43s are kind of rare around my neighborhood. Mostly I see UH-1, UH-60, OH-58 and AH-64 helicopters around here, plus TV news & what-not. I can usually identify the model from the rotor sound, but I always look to see if I'm right.

It was while I was returning home from my errand that I saw Marine 1 flying north accompanied by what I think might be that same CH-43.

A TV show awhile ago mentioned that there were in fact 3 Marine 1 helos that
are used to confuse potential 'bad guys'.

Subject: OT: How far do you think ... ?

How far do you think the President of the U.S. travels by helicopter
before the distance becomes so great that they'd use Air Force 1 instead?

I'm pretty sure I saw "Marine One" pass over my house about half an hour
ago, headed north towards DC, and I know Obama was down at Ft. Bragg this
morning.

By automobile, it would be about 327 miles from the White House to 18th
Airborne Corps HQ (according to Google Maps)... figure about 250 miles "as
the crow flies".

I just wonder if they'd make the entire trip in the helicopter or if
they'd take a helicopter out to Andrews to meet Air Force 1 and another
helicopter would be staged down at Pope AFB to make the hop over to Corps
HQ (or where ever they met the soldiers).
