Dave - I only have experience with the Omaha Camera Club.  I've been a
member for several years.  You can see a bit about how the club
operates at www.OmahaCameraClub.net.

One of the activities is a monthly "contest."  There is a category
with an assigned topic every month, similar to the pug.  My
participation in this has been spotty, but this is a pretty good
motivator to get out and shoot.

It's an interesting group, made up of everything from beginners to
pros.  It's a good way too learn about other viewpoints.

These type of clubs must have been what people did before the Internet.
