Paul ...

I have an uncounted number of filters in all flavors ... when I compare
I try to compare like with like. I believe the SMC filters are superior
to Heliopan and B+W. Light transmission seems to be better, reflections
less, build quality about equal, and cost less. But Pentax makes a
limited number of sizes and colors, so Heliopan and B+W are used here as
well. The truth is that the thinner Heliopans might be considered a
"better" filter if thin is an important requirement. B+W might be
considered the better filter if a wide variety of colors is important
(they have three or four yellows, for example, a similar number of
reds), and certainly B+W and Heliopan are better if you need a filter in
a diameter that Pentax doesn't make.

Here's a caveat about Heliopan, from my experience, YMMV: some Pentax
lens hoods do not screw into the thinner filter securely. In that
situation perhaps a B+W or SMC Pentax would be better. Oddly enough,
some hoods work fine with the thinner Heliopan. Go figure <shrug>.
