I don't find "the Missus" patronizing - I think it is rather nice - especially if you aren't actually technically married in the eyes of the law.

although, in the context I think Frank refers to I would have preferred
'My sweetie" or "my better half"

I would never dream of referring to Marlene as either the missus or the Mrs. I 
simply call her my old lady.
