In Silver Efex Pro you can just play with the contrast & brightness
sliders (on whatever preset you are playing with to start with).
Running contrast all the way to the top will normally leave you with
simple B&W.

Otherwise, if you are trying to do it without Photoshop (either
Elements or the full version) you might want to try GIMP. Convert
image to greyscale and play with brightness and contrast (running
contrast to the top should leave you with B&W only... the amount of
shadow that goes black will be controlled by the brightness you set
first). Gotta believe there is a way to do that in Lightroom, too, but
I still haven't gotten into LR to tell you step-by-step.
