It's not quite that simple, though. While the path taken by the ship was different from the one on the previous cruise (which did not turn to pass closer to the island), a map printed in my newspaper (the San Jose Mercury News) earlier this week also shows the route used on a cruise a few months ago. At the detail level visible in the map in the newspaper, which was pretty similar to that in the map in the above video, the vessel appears to have completed the crossover between the two routes, and to be pretty much following the path of that earlier cruise. Without a more detailed map, copies of the charts being used, and information about the tide levels at the time, we just don't have enough information to assign blame.
