That very long non-musical introduction just wore my patience thin, and then Oscar took a while getting into the tune so I turned it off. Now Ella! I have always loved her versions, but I love everything she does. It's been said that she was not only the greatest jazz vocalist ever but was the greatest jazz musician, period. That's an assessment I'm more and more coming to agree with.
About a year ago, I was doing photography at a dance event, and one of the special guests was Norma Miller, one of the pioneers of Lindy Hop. She has some great stories, one of which was cutting school one day, and seeing Ella Fitzgerald sing for the first time.
