That just goes to show you how misleading single cases can be. My Pioneer VSX-07TX receiver has been superb for 15 years.
My next Pioneer purchase was a tape deck, in 1977. After three years it began eating tapes. After repeated trips to the repair shop achieved nothing, I replaced it with an Akai deck. 30 years later it is still doing the job.
But, like a lemming, I then bought a Pioneer turntable in 1983. It lasted one year and two weeks (ie. two weeks after the warranty expired), and then stopped working. The dealer was no help, so I replaced it with a Dual...which is still working great.
The only decent experience I have had with Pioneer was a car deck, which went into my Saab in 1977 and was still working fine when I traded it in, in 1983.
I'm hesitant about seeking advice from employees of audio visual stores, because their profit margin on some brands is larger than on others.
They typically know more than the drones at Best Buy!
A very good source of information is the online Audio Video Science Forum at www.avforum.com. There's a vast amount of information there, but if you wade through it you can get a consensus opinion from some very knowledgable people.
Good point, and that is what I did when I was looking for an amp. Hearing it at the audio store sealed the deal. The fact that it was 50% off helped matters, too!
