For some reason I couldn't picture this, but y'all were right. The little spring-loaded tab that you pull down with a fingernail to release the battery door is broken all the way through (it is in 2 pieces). Meaning that when you pull it down with your fingernail, the upper part remains engaged and you can't open the door. I haven't taken it apart yet, but it appears that I can get to the tab from the inside of the battery door (three small phillips head screws). If I can JB Weld the tab and then put it back together after it cures, I should be good as new.
