I have photographed the needle several times in the past, but since it
is in a rain forest, it is usually covered in mist and backed by solid
clouds.  This day was quite special.

The valley floor is about 1,000 feet above sea level, and the needle
rises about 1200 feet above the valley.  Behind the needle is Puʻu
Kukui, which is 5800 feet above sea level, and the second wettest spot
in Hawai'i, getting almost 400 inches of rain a year.  I suspect the
cliffs immediately behind the needle rise about 2,000 feet above the
valley floor, and at least 1,000 feet above the top of the needle.
