Hood was firmly in place, Bob. I'm a firm believer in them, and I always use 'em, even indoors.
The cooling vents on the softboxes were velcroed open. At my distance, I could see the bare flash tube, so 300WS of light was hitting me at about 15 degrees off -- x2: from two sides! I later closed the vents and solved the problem.
