Living someplace where we've got roads like Alba that rise 640m in 6.4km,

When my leg heals I'll be on my way :) We have a climb here which is the same
average gradient but only half the distance (it maxes at about 15% near the
top). It's fairly brutal at the end of a decent ride...

Alba:
    distance: 3.8 miles
    climbing: 2050 feet

Two-thirds from Hwy 9 to Empire Grade, Alba averages 10.2%, rather steep for something which gains over 2000 feet. The average grade doesn’t do it justice, however, as the grade is highly inconsistent, with sections near 5% intermixed with significant portions at 15% to 20%. With road gears (a low of 39/28 or bigger), surviving this climb is an exercise in pain. The steep sections aren’t so long that a fit rider can’t power through them, however. As a descent, it isn’t bad given its steepness.

If you like riding on hills, the Santa Cruz Mountains is a nice place to be. If you enjoy wine tasting as an opportunity to rest and rehydrate on these rides, then the Santa Cruz Mountains is paradise. If that's your goal, I'd suggest coming on a Passport day:

Because a lot of the interesting little wineries off steep sections of road are only open for tasting on one of the four Passport days each year. There are even a few photographic opportunities along the way.
