Yes, it does make a loud splashing sound, accompanied by a significan splash.

I have indeed thought about switching to video for capturing the
Whales of Maui.  I may try that next year.  The great frustration of
trying to photograph whales is that one is always too late.  A total
breach happens suddenly and without warning.  I have seen quite a few,
but have never captured a single one with my camera.
