Yesterday I shipped my DA* 16-50 off to Pentax/CRIS for repair. It
would focus when the focal length was wider than 28mm, but beyond that
it could never get a focus lock. Even high-contrast objects would
befuddle the thing.

Before you suggest it was a camera problem rather than the lens, I
tested it on a K10D, K-7 and someone else's K-5. Same results every
time. I have no idea why it would behave this way. It would usually
get close to focusing properly, but the camera could never confirm
focus. Even in manual focus it wouldn't give me a focus confirmation.
Strangest problem I've ever seen.

This is the third time I've had to send the lens in for focus-related
repair. The first two times it was because the motor had seized up. As
I've said before, this sort of performance makes me think twice about
buying an SDM lens again in the future.
