Yesterday I shipped my DA* 16-50 off to Pentax/CRIS for repair. It would focus when the focal length was wider than 28mm, but beyond that it could never get a focus lock. Even high-contrast objects would befuddle the thing.
Before you suggest it was a camera problem rather than the lens, I tested it on a K10D, K-7 and someone else's K-5. Same results every time. I have no idea why it would behave this way. It would usually get close to focusing properly, but the camera could never confirm focus. Even in manual focus it wouldn't give me a focus confirmation. Strangest problem I've ever seen. This is the third time I've had to send the lens in for focus-related repair. The first two times it was because the motor had seized up. As I've said before, this sort of performance makes me think twice about buying an SDM lens again in the future.
