I was thinking about blown out sections of a photo and how it is often just one channel that clips. It seems that it would be possible to do something like content aware fill, using color balance from nearby areas, and the vallues in the non clipped channels to extrapolate in the blown out areas. A simple example might be colored stage lights, where you can see red at the edges but which look yellow, then white as channels clip.
