I've been getting by with the stock screen in the K-5. It is much better
than the stock screens in my previous DSLRs I had almost convinced myself
that I didn't need to buy a katzeye for it.
Last night, I had the K-5 set up on a tripod using the intervalometer. At
one point I grabbed the K-x with FA77 and started photographing the dancers.
I had much better results using the K-x with the Katzeye screen than I did
with the K-5 and stock screen.
The only problem is, I don't really have the money for the katzeye screens.
They are without a doubt worth the money, I just don't have it. What are the
alternatives out there for split prism screens? I believe that there is a
Canon focusing screen that is very popular for conversions, if you are
willing to cut it down yourself.
Anybody have experience, or recommendations?

I have no experience, but I'm also on the look out for one. I
personally want one with a 45 degree prism.
On my search i noticed that deal extreme sells some for cheap:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/dual-45-degrees-split-image-focus-screen-for-pentax-k7-102860
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/180-degree-3-in-1-high-accuracy-foucsing-screen-for-pentax-k7-101921
I found one of the 180 degree etc. screens on ebay with a "make best
offer" button on it with a b.i.n. of $28, offered $20, and they accepted
my offer. So, I'm certainly willing to give that a try. I expect that
I'll eventually want to drop the bucks on one from Katzeye or
focusingscreen.com, but this should get me a lot closer for a lot less
money.
