I think your suggestion is right on the mark.  I like that palm tree,
and I climbed over a little hill to get an angle that would place it
next to the best part of the sunset.  Trying to lighten the tree also
lightened the crap at the bottom, and took some of the drama out of
the clouds.  I didn't want to over-process the image, as I wanted it
to retain the appearance it had to my eye.  Your suggestion leaves the
tree in silhouette, which I like, and eliminates the clutter without
dulling the clouds.  I like it.
