Those settings are controlled by the four-way switch, and they apply only when shooting jpeg. I rarely shoot jpegs, but I keep the broad range setting on "normal," and that has worked fine on the occasions when I have shot jpegs. Sharpness and contrast and some other functions are controlled by a scale that appears below the range setting. I bumped both sharpness and contrast up one notch I believe, and left the others untouched.
