If I were any good at backgrounds I'd use something other than unlit black 
backdrops myself.

Despite my propensity for fungus photos, I don't try and make every picture I 
take be sexy.

One thing I need to experiment with is gelled strobes on backdrops.

Since you've got the blown out white background that's easy to substitute, you 
could try just getting shots of gelled strobes on white seamless, and then 
'shop that in as the background.  The strobist DVD also shows him flashing the 
strobe through things like stacked up water glasses to get an interesting 
pattern on the wall.  

Again, on the subject of photoshopping in the background you might look for 
some interesting period photos, or movie scenes that you could composite into 
the background.  In black and white, not trying to make it a perfect fit, but 
using it as a mood setting backdrop.
