We have "the world's longest single span covered bridge in the US" in the 
foothills about 25 miles away. It's in a small state park named Bridgeport.
A park ranger explained that the cover was to protect the wood from the 
elements and extend the life of the bridge.
I have a shot of it and may look it up and post.

Very attractive rural scene.  Covered bridges seem (to me) to be intimately 
associated with the USA (apologies if they're common elsewhere, but they're 
unknown in my neck of the woods).  I often wonder why they needed to be covered.
