Walt, GOOD LUCK, Joe
Hi all,
Welp! As the subject line implies, there's good news and bad news to report.
First, the bad news: The potential "hidden damage" to my K-x someone
alluded to in my post wherein I lamented the loss of my A 50/1.7 is
no longer potential, nor hidden. It is quite real and apparent. It
seems the AF/MF switch is jammed in the MF position, but with the AF
contact extended so that the camera is in permanent AF. It still
focuses with either type of lens on it, though you can't manually
focus an AF lens (at least not without risking damage to the lens
motor, I'm assuming). So, the camera is still plenty operable, but
obviously needs to be repaired.
Now the good news: I received my replacement A 50/1.7 today, so all
is almost right with the world. I did a little lens swapping with a
PDML'er (who contacted me privately to make the deal, so I'll
respect that privacy by not naming them or giving any details of the
swap unless they care to identify themselves). It was a permanent
replacement rather than the indefinite loan John Francis so kindly
and generously offered me, so I felt compelled to accept the other
offer rather than take advantage of a kindhearted gesture that would
have deprived a fellow Pentaxian of a fine (if underutilized) lens.
So, you take the good with the bad. I'm hoping the repair for the
K-x will be relatively simple and inexpensive. Everything else about
the camera seems to be working just fine, though. And, now that
things are beginning to pick up a little around the workplace, I may
be able to afford the repair sooner rather than later. One can only
hope and/or pray -- depending upon one's personal religious
convictions or lack thereof.
