Do not do this. You will make a supreme mess and require you to clean the Vaseline. You do not want any kind of lubricant inside the lens that it wasn't designed to have. That's how you get gummed up aperture blades; someone thought that a little bit of lubrication would help, then it turns to glue.
If you want to make sure that you don't lose the detent, take the aperture ring off inside a bag like a large ziplock bag. Close it up as much as is practical and slide the ring off. If it's going to go flying, it will be in the bag, not in the pile of your carpet.
