Hey gang, <salivation glands on>
Ok, I just recieved my newest 'toy.' I recently bought a very fine specimin of the SMC Pentax 4.5/500 in K-mount. It comes complete with a case that has straps so large it's easily held on the back. The lens itself is VERY heavy, and I'm glad it has a built in tripod collar, because there is no way the tripod mount on a camera can possibly hold this baby. My initial thoughts? Neat lens, it has a 'gun sight' on the top to allow for ease of finding your subject . . . The tripod collar doesn't seem to turn easily (is it designed to rotate on the collar?) A very nice feature is that you're able to loosen a thumbscrew right next to the mount, which allows the k-mount to twist 90 degrees. I'm assuming this is to make it easy to switch from horizontal to vertical while mounted on a tripod. The front lenscap is made of metal, (Boz, make a note of this for thek-mount pages) and fits very nicely on the front of the lens. A built in hood is REALLY nice feature on a lens like this (afterall, where in the world are you going to find a 112mm lens hood?) I'm thinking it might be a good idea to get a skylight filter on the front of this thing . . . anyone know the size (just in case my estimate of 112mm is wrong) of the front element filter? I have checked Boz's site, but it's not listed there. Oh, and does anyone know if smaller filters can be held inside the lens somewhere? I have yet to discover the answer to this, and don't want to mess anything up. Thanks, Illinois Bill - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
