My low cost but excellent Chinese made Monopod came with a case similar to the one shown in the link you posted, and both as a set for just $ 25 + shipping. Here is the suggestion as requested by you. I see Engineering students carrying light weight plastic tubes in various lengths with shoulder strap. Some of these are in beautiful colors and ribbed design with quick opening caps that stay hinged to the main tube. Students use them for carrying their design drawings rolled up inside the tubes.
