Thanks, Ann! No, never got caught up in any violence. All the pictures are from the rally at Petrillo. The wooded area turned into a staging area for marchers, readying themselves to head down to McCormick place, so it was very family orientated prior to the actual march.
I was going to march, but in the end decided against it. Even if I had marched, I think I would have been just fine. It was the Black Block protesters (which I labeled Ninja protesters in the gallery) that for the most part antagonized the police, but that was their intent, and if you view the Chicago Tribune gallery, they got what they intended. Darrel went with me, and he would have marched if I wanted to, but in the end I decided to keep us both safe, so we took some pictures, had lunch and a coffee, then headed home on the EL. Public transportation was a breeze. I expected heavier crowds, but never saw them. Rick Wormer's daughter is working as a street medic. Maybe Rick will give a different account via his daughter. To be sure, mine is a warm and fuzzy gallery of the event :-). No photojournalistic heroics on my part for yesterday's event. I was merely tourist.
