To be specific, a No. 14 welding glass (only) is safe. Do not stack lesser opacities. If you have a narrow telephoto, like the preset Takumar 200mm f/5.6 (which has a 49mm filter size) you might be able to get by with a 2-1/4" glass (and use a teleconverter).
