HI Larry -
My two cents: Understand what 'technical quality' means. Borrow a copy
of Ansel Adams' "The Negative" and read the first 3 chapters. (The rest
is interesting but too focused on B&W photography and specific products.)
What is bothering you about your images? Acutance? Resolution? Noise?
The concept of 'sharpness' is a function of these three things. Figure
out which of these is the issue and then decide how to tackle the
problem. Once I read that and understood it I realized why my 6 mp
*ist-D would blow away Velvia for snow crystal shots, and why I would
need MF (or larger) film to handle certain landscapes. But understanding
what is going on in the recorded image is essential. "Sharpness' is not
only a bourgeois concept, is it one that lacks any precise technical
definition.
