In one word - "nothing". In more than one word - I bought some fancier gear (such as DA* 16-50/2.8 and/or a camera with focusing screen better suited for manual focusing), yet I find that absolute sharpness and/or crispiness of my shots is pretty overrated concept. The moment, the composition and the emotional appeal (the latter being conveyed not just by means of sharpness) and in fact the more thorough attention to processing are at least as important as basic technical qualities such as sharpness or exposure.

Your mileage is likely to vary substantially.
