You left out "affordable". Whatever the limitations of DOS, the PCs that ran it were accessible to the masses.

If Apple had been even remotely affordable when I bought my first computer (an Amstrad - remember them?), I might have bought one and been a happy Mac user today. But they weren't, I didn't and hell will freeze over before I do.
