John, these were from one of the viewpoints along the North Rim side.
They have opened up numerous new areas that you can park and walk just
a short distance to see incredible views. MUCH nicer than from South
Rim IMHO. I believe these were just east and north from the North Rim
Lodge viewpoint, which isn't all that great as far as vista's are
concerned.
I thought it might have been the South Rim near Desert View.
One of my early unsuccessful experiments in using strobes for fill was
trying to balance the interior of the north rim Grand Canyon Lodge with
the views out of the windows.
I found the North Rim somewhat disappointing. None of the vistas seemed
to be as good as the South Rim. I think it's a matter of perspective.
The North Rim is about 1000 feet higher than the South Rim, and it seems
like there's some trick of the light that just makes the views clearer
from the south.
It's a very long drive coming up through Page, AZ and down to the lodge.
Even longer if you go out on the Walhalla plateau. I was there in 2007,
a couple of years after the big fire in the Kaibab National Forest.
I visited the South Rim in 1960 and in 2005.
