I can believe that they were making an honest attempt to portray this
woman in a meaningful light and that the "pretentiousness" is more
lack of skill than intent.  (I enjoyed the photos and didn't even know
about the movies.)  This kind of stuff will happen simply because her
photos are so eye-catching for many folks and because her lack of fame
during her life has made this all so mysterious.   It's irresistible
to try to extrapolate the person from the pictures.  I could easily
see a longer "one woman play" just like this with the photos showing
in the back.
