Shel, Bob and Doug McKenzie were/are Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis. They
were originally from SCTV, Second City's TV show, in a segment called
The Great White North. They would sit in front of a big map of Canada,
on an ugly couch, making back bacon on a Coleman camping stove and
drinking beer from stubby bottles. They wore touques and plaid wool
jackets, and spoke in a thick "Canadian" accent that was hysterically
funny. They would usually just tell stories and argue. Their topics of
conversation were invariably drinking, things to do while drinking,
smoking, and doughnuts.
They made a movie, called Strange Brew, which included a scene where
they are about to be drowned in a giant vat of beer at a distillery, and
one of them says something like, "When I was young I always dreamed
about drowning in a vat of beer, but now that I'm here this really
sucks."
They made an album, called The Great White North, which features their
"hit single" with Geddy Lee from Rush. They argue about how an album is
made, who gets paid how much ("the album was our agent's idea...we're
getting ten bucks. EACH."), if the album is over yet or not, and then
they perform a truly dreadful version of The 12 Days of Christmas ("four
pounds of backbacon, three french toasts, two turtlenecks, and a
beer"). It can be found on CD in Canadian record stores for usually
less than $8 CDN. It is so very worth $8.
Signature phrases include "Good day", "Take off, you hoser", "Okay, go,"
(when one has interrupted the other), "Ya, eh", "Gimme a smoke", and
their theme song, which has no words other than Coo loo coo coo coo loo
coo coo.
If I can dig up the CD here at work, I can send you an MP3 or two, if
you really want to hear them. ;)
