As an aside,  the specific request was photos showing the band playing to a 
large crowd.  I was particularly encouraged to shoot from the stage, looking 
out over the crowd.  As it got dark, and the band had stage lights on them, and 
the crowd didn't, I came up with an interesting solution.  I made a snoot out 
of newspaper and tape, put it on the flash and aimed the flash to illuminate 
the crowd and not the band.  I also put the flash up on my monopod, holding it 
as far above my head as I could.

One thing that I found myself wishing for, was something I came up with an idea 
for a couple years ago.  A fresnel lens that is designed to throw most of a 
flash's light close to horizontal, and less down, to counteract the inverse 
square exposure issues when you're trying to photograph out over a crowd.
