As an aside, the specific request was photos showing the band playing to a large crowd. I was particularly encouraged to shoot from the stage, looking out over the crowd. As it got dark, and the band had stage lights on them, and the crowd didn't, I came up with an interesting solution. I made a snoot out of newspaper and tape, put it on the flash and aimed the flash to illuminate the crowd and not the band. I also put the flash up on my monopod, holding it as far above my head as I could.
One thing that I found myself wishing for, was something I came up with an idea for a couple years ago. A fresnel lens that is designed to throw most of a flash's light close to horizontal, and less down, to counteract the inverse square exposure issues when you're trying to photograph out over a crowd.
