If all goes as planned, I'm making a trip out to the Black Hills and then on

It should be a great trip. If you're around Custer State Park, be sure
to drive Needles Highway (Rt 87) from Rt 16A up to the Sylvan Lake
area. We only managed to get there while hurrying to a later dinner,
but the character of that section of the park is very different from
the rest, with interesting spires of rock. I wish I'd had a better
chance to photograph and hike there.
I think we had better luck with the wildlife in the Badlands (in terms
of frequency and closeness), but you should still have good
opportunities in the Black Hills. (Since we did the Badlands first,
maybe I wasn't trying as hard in the Black Hills. "Eh, we've seen 200
bison and dozens of sheep and pronghorns already, keep driving...")
Thanks for the tips. I can't tell you how anxious I am to take this
trip. I likely won't be doing any camping, as I suspect it'll be turning
off fairly cold by the end of September. But, based on what I've seen in
your photos, I'm just dying to get out there, temperatures notwithstanding.
I hope you realize that you've made the next month and a half an
excruciating exercise in deferred gratification for me.
