I think Ken's right. The new artists get their reputations and make their names by breaking the conventions and defying the definitions of the "known" artists. Then the "new" artists become "known" artists and the next generation comes along and starts the cycle again.
That argument is biting its own tail, since no artist has a known name before they make themselves a reputation. :-)
The rate at which new names become established these days continue to amaze me. Maybe I'm just getting old.
