After I got a small scratch on the edge of the front element, when a 77mm UV 
filter came with the Tokina, I put it on the 16-50.

I just did a quick test.  It doesn't seem much worse with the UV filter, and it 
only seems to happen when there is a very bright light source right next to a 
very dark subject.
