Secondly, I'll want a way to mount one axially behind a k-mount lens. M42
would be sort of easy, just drill two holes on the same axis, one the size of
the laser, one 42mm, and then thread the hole for m42 lenses. I sort of did
this with my current setup which uses an old 50mm Argus C3 lens. This spreads
the beam nicely, but I'd like to be able to change focal lengths to change the
spread of the beam, and I have a much wider range of K-mount than m42 lenses.

no idea about laser sources, but if you'd like the K-mount and immediately surrounding chassis from an old A3000 i'll send it to you for shipping; it has a working quick release, and it appears the chassis rear presents a plane which is square to the light path, which should make it relatively easy to attach stuff properly to the back

there is also a momentary switch (for the backlight) and a toggle switch (for the self timer) which both still appear to work

another option you might consider is a bellows unit with K-mount on the front and M42 (or other) on the back

(if you want to go high-end i have a SMC 100/4 Bellows lens plus Auto-Bellows A for sale; the male K-mount ring uncouples from the back and a machine shop could easily fabricate a custom ring to replace it)
