I think it's a new slot between the K-r successor and K-5 successor.
Weather sealing, 100% pentaprism, and two control dials are a big step
up from the K-letter line.

While it does have one more e-dial than K-r/K-x, the mode dial is still on the right-hand side.

*ist-D, K10D, K20D, K-7 & K-5 have all had the mode dial on the left and an LCD display panel on the right so you could tell your settings at a glance without having to turn on the menu on the monitor.

The lack of a display panel top right puts the K30 firmly in the K-letter class.
