On the fly panoramas are a useful app. I know people like to be curmudgeons on this list (and other places), but there are things that I'd love to be able to do with photography that isn't really possible or practical with dSLRs. Not everything photographic needs to be ultra-serious and old-fashioned.
And, contrary to what some people think, not everyone that uses a smartphone is using instagram and cheesy digital filters.
