Yes, well. Looking at Dave's original image, I thought the loco was travelling short hood first. There's some sort of reflection on the side that I thought was a cab window. Looking at the Durham Heritage Railway's rolling stock shots and your link to the Alco, it seems that the loco was travelling long hood first and it's not so unusual after all.

In my defence, the Alco RS-11 *is* unusual downunder (er...I think).
