I was taught to erase ink with a Pen knife, the small folding pocket
knife carried by gentlemen. It works much better on vellum than rag or
wood based paper, but if you're careful it still works. It was also
useful for sharpening quills and pencils.

The substance called rubber got its name because when rubbed on paper,
pencil and ink marks disappeared.
before rubbers people used bread to satisfy their erasing needs
So in fact your wife's royal wedding commemorative rubber (which she
used for so many years) was performing the function that gave rise to
why rubber got called rubber in the first place.
I'll bet you didn't know that...
The "other" meaning of rubber which you allude to is much more recent.
It only came about in the 1930s.
before rubbers people used (and reused) silk or sheep's gut to satisfy their
prophylactic needs
So there you go. What starts out as a photo of a couple of English
monarchists comes around to a discussion of condoms.
I love pdml!

Great photo Rick. It captures that particular kitsch that Brits come up
with for Royal events. I was in England before the Charles & Diana
wedding and scored a genuine "royal wedding souvenir rubber" Those who
speak King's English could explain why my wife used it for years.
Loved the photo, thanks for the memory.

We were in the UK the week after the Diamond Jubilee, and the
decorations were still up.? I don't know what I can say tactfully about
these:

Don't lose heart, they might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
